Masking?

Ok I've read a lot about masking tape on here and tbh I'm confused! I don't mask anything apart from surfaces you have to keep clean like floors and varnished wood. I cut my skirts in top and bottom quickly freehand too.
I can understand why you'd mask for spraying obviously.
